When it comes to sex, both men and women fall into one of two groups: They’re either prone to be sexually promiscuous, or they’re inclined to be faithful. At least, that’s what the results of a new study concludes.
The researchers analyzed the answers of 575 North American and British people about their social and sexual attitudes. This analysis revealed that people’s answers tended to be clumped into two groups. One group was more likely to value sexual fidelity. The other group was more likely to be promiscuous.
While the data showed that men were more likely to stray (57%), women weren’t far behind. Almost half of the women (47%) favored unrestricted, short-term mating strategies.
However, when researchers looked at the reason why this could occur, the answer may surprise you.
In a separate analysis, measurements of the right index finger (the “pointer” finger) and the ring finger were taken from 1,313 British people. And this is where things get interesting.
It turns out that the shorter the index finger is in relation to the ring finger, the higher levels of testosterone that person was likely exposed to in the womb. This is true of both genders. And based on previous research, higher levels of fetal testosterone can go hand-in-hand with greater sexual promiscuity.
Is this an exact science? Not necessarily. However, it does indicate that the length of the ring finger versus the index finger might help identify if a person is more likely to “stay” or “stray.”
“We cannot really predict who is going to be more or less faithful. Human behavior is influenced by many factors, such as the environment and life experience, and what happens in the womb might only have a very minor effect on something as complex as sexual relationships’, according co-author Professor Robin Dunbar.
